Flagship Programme

Atlantic Environmental Education Series

2014 – 2025

One of FACRP's most enduring educational achievements, the Atlantic Environmental Education Series has been running continuously since 2014 with the support of Atlantic LNG. The programme delivers structured, curriculum-linked environmental education to primary and secondary school students across Trinidad.

Students visit the Fondes Amandes watershed for hands-on sessions covering fire ecology, native plant identification, watershed dynamics, and community stewardship — leaving with both knowledge and a personal connection to the land.

Over a decade of continuous programming, thousands of students have passed through the FACRP field school — many of whom have gone on to become environmental advocates in their own communities.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Our field schools blend hands-on environmental education with real community action. Participants don't just learn about forests — they plant trees, clear firebreaks, identify native species, and contribute meaningfully to the watershed they're studying.

Programmes are designed for all ages — from primary school visits to adult community groups and corporate team-building — with each session tailored to the participants' context and curriculum needs.

Amazonic the Forest Defender is FACRP's educational mascot — a character created to deliver fire prevention and biodiversity messages through locally-rooted storytelling. Through books, school visits, and online media, Amazonic makes environmental education engaging and authentically Caribbean.

Citizen Science

ReWild Watch

ReWild Watch invites people from all backgrounds to observe, document, and share information about wildlife populations and forest conditions across Trinidad & Tobago. The programme creates a scalable movement of community-based environmental monitoring.

Participants use platforms like iNaturalist to log sightings of native species — building a living, community-contributed database that informs conservation decisions and connects everyday people to the biodiversity on their doorstep.

Rooted in the West African practice of collective labour, Gayap brings communities together to tackle challenges with shared purpose, knowledge, and spirit. At FACRP, Gayap is both a method and a philosophy — how we plant trees, fight fires, and restore hillsides together.

Merikin — Resistance, Resilience & Sustainability

Honouring the legacy of the Merikin people — formerly enslaved Africans who chose freedom and built self-sufficient communities in the forests of Trinidad. Their ancestral knowledge of land, plants, and community self-reliance directly informs FACRP's philosophy today.
