The Fondes Amandes experience

Greetings, my name’s Jonathan. I’m a student at the University of the West Indies St. Augustine, pursuing a degree in Environmental and Natural Resource Management. I decided to be a volunteer at FACRP because I wanted some form of real world experience pertaining to my field of study, and FACRP provided exactly that.

My first week at Fondes Amandes was an interesting one to say the least. I had the experience of not only witnessing a forest fire, but also aiding in getting the fire under control on the very first day of my volunteering. Unfortunately, the fire that occurred and had been occurring for several days well, was caused due to the careless and inconsiderate actions of various individuals. Another UWI volunteer and I, were even asked to assist in writing up a fire report as a form of record.

Later that same week, I was asked to assist with a tour visit by Holy Faith Couva Secondary. Most if not all of the students participated in the activities set out for them, and they ended off their visit by going up to the FACRP amphitheatre, where they provided some entertainment in the form of singing.

The weeks that followed comprised of several other tours/visits, a little office work, and working up at the Ridge Top with Mr. John Stollmeyer. Despite the walk up to the Ridge Top being somewhat exhausting, the amazing view witnessed from being so high up, was itself a reward.
