The Dry Season at FACRP

Good day, my name is Ryan and I was a BSU field school student at FACRP last year. I have now come back to volunteer at FACRP on my own time and the experience has been just as amazing as the last one.

Last time I volunteered here was during the rainy season and now that I am here during the fire season I get to see the work the project does during this time of year. One part of the work I did not have the opportunity to be a part of last year was the school tours. This week we taught students from Maraval R.C. Primary School all about fire safety during the dry season. This was the first time I was able to partake in both a school visit and the fire safety lesson so it was a learning experience for me as well. Everyone wanted to partake in demonstrating one of the three steps used to prevent forest fires, each one hoping they could spray with the hose or use the fire beater or rake while their friends cheered them on.

After the demonstration and a well earned break we all began our hike up to the lookout tower on the hill. On the way there we showed the children some of the leaves they’ll find in the forest like bay leaf and many others. When we reached the nursery we had 4 students plant a mango tree for their school, something I’m sure they’ll remember when they do return.

Our hike ended at the amphitheater where Sarah read the students the story of Amazonic ‘d Forest Defender.

Being able to partake in the school tours was a lot of fun and I look forward to partake in future tours to teach more students about the forest and learn more myself.
